Types of Industrial Dryers
The industrial dryer has become a versatile tool in the workplace. Each type of dryer has a specific design for its intended purpose. These machines are applied in a variety of industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemical manufacturing and food processing. Large, high-capacity laundry dryers are also manufactured for large businesses.
Spray Dryer
A spray dryer is designed to process a liquid form of feed and then dries the feed into a solid form. It accomplishes this by spraying the feed through a nozzle into a heated chamber. Several nozzles can be used for this purpose. The different types of nozzles include a single high-pressure air nozzle, two fluid nozzles or a centrifugal disc nozzle. The air in the chamber is heated by either an air heater, thermic fluid or steam coils. This air is released into the chamber at the top. A few examples of food that may be processed in this matter include whey powder, ice cream mix powder, molasses and instant coffee.
Rotary Dryer
The rotary dryer is a large cylinder that rotates and heats the material inside of it. The rotation allows the material inside to be mixed to a proper consistency. Super-heated air is pumped into the cylinder and this air may reach a temperature of up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Two types of rotary dryers are manufactured: co-current and counter-current dryers. The co-current wet material comes in contact with the hot air to help it dry. This process works well with sticky or heat sensitive items. The counter-current dryer takes dried material and surrounds it with hot air in order to lower the moisture content. A few items that are dried with a rotary dryer include china clay, citric acid, ammonium sulphate and sodium sulphate.
Vacuum Band Dryer
The vacuum band dryer is used for drying materials that contain sugar. The chamber vacuum seals and the materials dry at a low temperature. The food is put on a band and then moves through the sealed dryer. It moves above several hot plates, which are heated by either steam or hot water. Uses for vacuum band dryers include drying pharmaceuticals, fruits/vegetables, beverage mixes and gelatin.
Spin Flash Dryer
This dryer is used to dry slurry, wet cake or paste. These items tend to be difficult to dry. The spin flash dryer is a heated, vertical chamber with a large screw in it. The screw rotates, pushing the material up through the chamber. The dryer also features a disintegrator, which aides in breaking the material apart. A few materials that can dry in a spin flash dryer are dyes, pigments, starch and amino acids.
Steam Tube Dryer
A steam tube dryer is a special type of indirect heat rotary dryer. It rotates and inside has rings of steam tubes that form concentric circles to heat the material. The steam tubes are efficient in how they move the heat from the tube to the material being dried. The result is that this dryer is among the most energy-efficient industrial dryers on the market. This dryer's uses include drying grains, germs and plant fibers or husks.
Industrial Laundry Dryer
Not all industrial dryers are used in manufacturing. Sometimes you need a dryer simply to do large loads of laundry. The AD-464 is capable of drying up to 460 lbs. of laundry at one time. It has 175 cubic feet of space to hold massive loads of clothes and linens. This dryer can put out 2,800,000 BTU's an hour. It is also capable of pulling in 13,000 cubic feet of air each minute. Businesses that commonly use this dryer include hospitals and hotels, which must process large amounts of laundry daily.
